Michigan has become the model state for the fresh apple cider industry.
So said the U.S. Department of Agriculture's former Under-Secretary Gus Schumacher when he visited Michigan State University for a meeting with apple industry representatives not long ago. Another federal agency, the Food and Drug Administration, has modeled some of its safety rulings after practices already widely adopted in Michigan. Cider makers from other states have visited Michigan to get ideas for improving their own operations.
